GLOBAL IMPROVEMENT OF TOTAL HIP RESULTS

On this page you will find the results of total hip replacements as published by surgeons from the whole world. My hope is that this global (whole world) recording will also demonstrate global improving of the results of this operation. VS.

Ten year survival of cementless total hips in Norway*)

The Norwegian National joint register published recently the survival data for all cementless total hips operated on since 1987 in Norway (Hallan 2007).

The diagram is based on data in Table III, "Survival figures after ten years" of the report.

The bars represent the ten year survival percentages of thirteen individual total hip models (see the Table for details on names and manufacturers of individual models) that came successively into use in Norway..

Every bar thus demonstrates the percentage of the total hips of the respective model that were still functioning (and not revision operated on) ten years after surgery.

According to the time when the total hip model came into use there are two groups of total hip models:

The first group includes the models that came into use in Norway in  the second half of the 1980’s (1987 – 89). This period is dark on the diagram and includes models 1 to 9.

In the second group (light part of the diagram, models 10 to 13) are included the four cementless total hip models that came into use in Norway in the mid 1990’s (1993 – 1995).

Comments to the diagram:

None of the nine models that came into use in the 1980's showed 90% or higher survival (a benchmark) ten years after surgery . Five of these models showed more than 20% failure rate during the ten postoperative years (models 1, 3, 4, 7, and 9: see Table for names). In one model (Biofit, Smith&Nephew  ) more than half of all total hip operated on failed within ten years after surgery!

On the other hand, two out of the four total hips models that came into use in the 1990's showed just 90% survival.

There is decidedly an  improvement in performance of the  total hip models that came into use in Norway in the the 1990’s. The trend line within the diagram confirms this improvement of the Norwegian cementless total hip results!

*) Norway is a country with a well organized and effective health care system. Norwegian orthopaedic surgeons developed a reliable system of recording the results of artificial joint replacements.  This statistics includes results of all cementless total hip operations done in whole Norway, operation performed in small country hospitals as well as operations done in university clinics. It is really close to a "global" statistics. This report may thus serve as a benchmark for comparison with other reports on the results of total hip replacement in the future.
