HOW   TO  USE  THE REFERENCES

published  at the end of the NEWS reports

To find a short summary of  the  paper referred to in the NEWS:

Go to the  MEDLINE  (National Library of Medicine database) and

Choose  PubMed

www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov:80/entrez/query/static/citmatch.html

The  "Single Citation Matcher" of the PubMed appears

It is a  form,  complete it  using the data from the Refences:

Journal - fill in the abbreviation from the References

Date - fill in the year from the References

Volume - fill in the volume from the References

Page - fill the first page from the References

A title of the paper appears

Click at the pad at the left of the paper's title - a summary of the published paper appears.

You may print the summary in a  text form or send it elsewhere. Select the appropriate action by clicking on the "Send to" menu (in the transverse bar above).

You may read the whole article free if it was published in Acta Orthopaedica

Just find the article in Medline database and  when you get the title and Abstract  click on the "View article button" which is below the Abstract.

You may get the copy of the article free if it was published in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery - American Volume.

Just go to the Journal online - http://www.JBJS.org  and locate the article following the Archive link on the top right of the blue bar under the Quick Search bar.

When the article has been located, click on the PDF option. The next screen that appears will bear the message "This item requires a subscription to Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery Online" and offer four options: sign in as a user, purchase short-term access, subscribe to the Journal, and patient access.

You should click on Access for Patients. That will start the process whereby you request the free copy, which the Journal will e-mail to you at no change.

Remember, however, that all this apply only if you are a patient or non-professional caretaker and you need the article.

For other Journals the Editors are greedy and wish to have your money for allowing you to read the whole article. If you wish to buy a copy of the whole paper,   select "Order Documents"  in  the left sidebar of the MEDLINE window and follow the instructions there. You must register first.

Many important orthopedic journals go online. You will know it from a rectangle above the title, which shows the publisher's logo. You may buy these papers  directly from the publisher. Click on the logo and follow the instructions.

If your library subscribes these journals, you may usually read / print  the papers online there (the pay for this service varies locally).
